Terrace Bay

Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseMcCausland Hospital, a fully accredited medical facility situated in Terrace Bay, serves residents of Schreiber along with some 5,000 people from Jackfish to Pays Plat. Named for the town's first physician, Michael McCausland the present structure was built in 1980 to replace the earlier hospital. It houses 17 acute care and eight chronic care beds, as well as a four-bed nursery.

 

In addition to obstetrics, minor surgery, outpatient and emergency care, McCausland Hospital offers such paramedical and technical services as radiology, laboratory, physiotherapy, ultrasound, and dietary departments. X-ray technologists perform all routine procedures, IVPS, gall bladders, G.I. series, and audiograms. A fluoro unit and vitalor are also available for respiratory testing. Basic chemistries and enzymes, haematology, urinalysis, and coagulation are the responsibilities of the Laboratory Department, where a blood bank was opened in 1985. The Physiotherapy Department the largest on the north shore, offers a wide range of treatment modalities, including hydrotherapy, S.W.D., ultrasound, traction, interferential current therapy, ultra pulsator, and an orthotron for isokinetic exercises. Medical and dental clinics, as well as offices for a speach pathologist and diabetic counsellor, are also located within the hospital.

 

Since 1981, Schreiber has been provided with Home Care Nursing Services through McCausland Hospital. Its three nurses visit patients and coordinate the Meals-on-Wheels Program. A physiotherapist from the hospital is also available for home visits.

 

Medical emergencies or conditions which cannot at Causland Hospital are transferred to other centers by land or air ambulance.

  • Medical Services: Obstetrics and gynecology, medical orthopedics, minor surgery and emergency care.
  • Diagnostic Service: Radiology, laboratory and cardiac stress testing.
  • Other services within the hospital include outpatient care, home care, and pastoral care, as well as medical and dental clinics. The hospital has ambulance and air ambulance services. Seventeen acute care and six chronic care beds, as well as a four bed nursery, are in the capable care of a dedicated staff.

 

Staff - education and team oriented, our physicians and staff of 72 work closely with provincial, regional and community health programs. Visiting specialists from Thunder Bay work regularly with our team in oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology.

 

Special Services - McCausland’s physiotherapy department is the largest and best equipped on the North Shore, offering rehabilitation and occupational therapy. The lab includes a well-stocked blood bank and state of the art analysis equipment. McCausland Hospital also has the services of a full-time dietician, providing hospital and community nutrition planning, and monitoring the local Meals on Wheels program. The acute care nursing ward is equipped with four cardiac monitored rooms along with a telemetry service monitor at the nursing station. McCausland Hospital also provides the "Lifetime System" which improves quality of home life for patients. From diagnostic imaging and ultrasound to cardiac monitoring, McCausland Hospital strives continually to provide the staff and community with all the necessary technology.
