The
Volunteer Association to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
is a very energetic, effective group of individuals who choose to work very
hard to assist the Health Sciences Centre’s patients and medical/support
staff.
Before the move to our new facility, the Volunteer Association made a $500,000
commitment to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in support of the Care Beyond
Compare Campaign. Volunteers dedicated many hours to raising funds through the
sale of Nevada tickets, baking, knitting, quilting, and teddy bear and cookbook
sales. In addition, through Tuck Shop sales at McKellar and Port Arthur General,
augmented with special events such as bazaars, raffles, "Sweet Thursday
Valentine sales", Strawberry Socials, and "Goodie Trays" at Christmas,
this five year financial commitment was completed in 2005. As a result of this
donation, the Volunteer Association was recognized as the 2nd highest donor
to the new Health Sciences Centre.
The Volunteer Association has just made a $100,000 commitment to the Foundation’s
“Save a Heart” Campaign to purchase a Holter Monitor System.
The Health Sciences Centre is in the middle of a major Strategic Plan and so
too is the Volunteer Association. This is an ongoing process which has been
very successful so far. The organization now has its own logo along with revised
Vision, Mission and Values statements.

“Bourbon Street To Broadway”
was a fun filled evening of fine dining at the Valhalla Inn and fine entertainment
provided by Calgary’s Foothills Brass. The funds from this one endeavour
were used to purchase a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Isolette. With the
help of our Corporate sponsors and various community donations, a total
of $16,000 was raised that evening. The Isolette is now in use in our
Neonatal Department with all the funding coming from the efforts of the
Volunteers. |

“Strawberry Social”
Every June, a group of Volunteers host the annual “Strawberry Social”.
Staff, volunteers and hospital visitors look forward to Short Cake, topped
with real strawberries and, of course, real whipping cream. It is a delightful
treat enjoyed by many. |

“Doll House Draw”
Just before Christmas, the Volunteers have a raffle showcasing the creative
talents of both our Volunteers and Staff. “The Doll House Draw”
is an example of the wonderful contribution of others to assist the Volunteer
Association in their fundraising endeavors. |

“Father’s Day Dream Draw”
The Volunteer Association to TBRHSC, in collaboration with The Hill City
Kinsmen, is having a “Father’s Day Dream Draw.” This
is an excellent example of two fundraising organizations working side
by side at Thunder Bay Regional in order to benefit each another. Our
Volunteers are assisting Hill City Kinsman to sell tickets and part of
the proceeds from this draw will be turned over to us in our mandate to
purchase equipment to enhance patient care. |
