Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is the tertiary acute care referral centre for Northwestern Ontario. We serve a client population
of approximately 275 000 in a geographic area the equivalent of France. In addition to TBRHSC, there are 12 smaller local and district
hospitals that provide acute care services to the region. All the hospitals in the region have a long-standing relationship in that we
support each other in clinical education, and professional practice projects, often using a high developed videoconferencing network to
facilitate these initiatives.
The regional approach to our BPSO Initiative will support the development of evidence-based innovation and will address common patient
care and professional practice issues shared by nurses throughout Northwestern Ontario.
There are many environments where the enhanced specialty knowledge and skill of nurses can be utilized to manage symptoms and the side-effects
of treatment, counsel patients in coping strategies, teach self-care behaviours, and monitor the responses to treatment and nursing
interventions. Care that is patient and family centered incorporates the growth and developmental needs of each member, and is respectful
of the family's resources and coping style.
