Exercise is and should be an integral part of a woman’s life during pregnancy. It can reduce symptoms of pain and nausea and
is proven to help reduce duration of labour if done consistently.
The exercise therapist at the Maternity Centre can offer FREE home programs tailored to your fitness level and equipment resources.
There are FREE prenatal exercise classes that stress wellness education and independence to plan for an active pregnancy and post partum
period.

- Numbness
- Chronic fatigue
- Weight gain management
- Wellness education
- Social interaction with peers in exercise classes

SOGC/CSEP Clinical Practice Guidelines and
Goals for Exercise During Pregnancy
- All women without contraindications should be
encouraged to participate in aerobic and strength-conditioning
exercises
- Maintain a good fitness level throughout pregnancy
without trying to reach peak fitness or train for
an athletic competition
- Choose activities that reduce loss of balance
and fetal trauma
- Women should be advised that adverse pregnancy
or neonatal outcomes are not increased for exercising
women
- Initiation of pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises throughout
the pregnancy and during the immediate post-partum
period may reduce the risk of future urinary incontinence
- Moderate exercise during lactation does not affect
the quantity or composition of breast milk or impact
infant growth
