 The
TBRHSC NICU is the regional Modified Level III NICU serving
Northwestern Ontario. As a Modified Level III facility, our
specialized team is able to care for critically ill and/or
premature newborns older than 27-28 weeks gestation. Newborns
with complex heart problems and/or who require surgery are
transferred to the nearest, available Level III facility.
Specialized care is provided for newborns in our well-equipped,
14-bed unit by our highly specialized team. The team consists
of paediatricians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social
workers, registered dieticians and spiritual care workers.
Babies admitted to the NICU also require their parents’
care, love and attention. Parents are welcome in NICU and
are encouraged to participate in the care of their babies
as appropriate for baby’s condition. Parent education
and support are provided throughout the hospital stay. Parenting
rooms are available 24 – 48 hrs prior to a baby’s
discharge. The baby’s nurse will provide parenting room
information to parents. The nurse will also make necessary
arrangements.
Breastfeeding, as recommended by the Canadian Institute of
Child Health, Health Canada and the World Health Organization
is supported at TBRHSC. Education and support are provided
to all parents for their baby feeding method of choice.
