TBRHSC is looking for CCFP-EM or FRCP trained physicians
to join our progressive, dynamic emergency department. We
enjoy a fantastic lifestyle, with a great mix of work and
play. The brand new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
opened in February 2004. The Health Sciences Centre is a designated
trauma facility and the referral center for all of Northwestern
Ontario, a catchment area of approximately 270,000 people.
We are also the Regional
EMS Base Hospital for pre-hospital care. This ensures
an interesting variety of medicine including acute care, pediatrics,
and trauma.
ER
Our
52 bed Emergency Department is the second busiest in Ontario
and sees over 90,000 visits annually. Our Emergency Department
is comprised of a mixture of full and part-time physicians
with FRCP and CCFP-EM certification. We are currently staffed
with 10 MD shifts per day, which promotes ongoing camaraderie
with colleagues. We have been able to maintain reduced waiting
times (non-acute patients rarely wait over two hours), which
translates to less stress on the entire emergency team.
Our schedule typically affords lots of time off to enjoy
all that Thunder Bay has to offer. Full-time work is approximately
13-14 shifts a month with an average of 2 midnights every
6 weeks. We also fund locums for popular times of the year
(Christmas, CAEP and summer) providing more flexibility for
holiday scheduling.
We are remunerated extremely well through an alternate funding
agreement (AFA). We are also designated for the Northern Incentive
Program, which helps offset tuition costs for new graduates.
Not only are we paid very well, but our cost of living in
Thunder Bay is very reasonable (check out real-estate on www.mls.ca
to see what we mean).
We have a progressive work atmosphere and are active in departmental
reform as well as teaching. As a group, we are dedicated to
CME and we have paid positions for Directors of Education
and Research. We have M&M rounds, Journal Club, and Multidisciplinary
Education Rounds as well as various local and telecast conferences.
We are looking forward to an Academic Alternate Funding Agreement,
which will ensure funding for our identified educational and
research goals.
With
the opening of the new Northern
Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay in 2005, our
department has been very active in instructing small group
sessions for the first and second year classes as well as
providing early clinical exposures. We are looking forward
to having our first clinical clerks in 2008. We are also preceptors
for the Family Medicine Residents in our department and frequently
provide lectures for their weekly rounds. The Family Medicine
residents have 15 residents per year with core rotations in
our ED. We are also excited to have our first CCFP-EM resident
starting in our department July 2007!

surrounding the city of Thunder
Bay provides an endless outdoor playground for those seeking
exploration and adventure. It offers a spectrum of outdoor
activity found minutes from your doorstep including rock
and ice climbing, skiing
(classic, skate, touring and downhill), canoeing, whitewater
and sea kayaking, wind surfing, sailing,
hiking, camping,
fishing,
hunting, mountain
biking and extensive running trails. It is truly a Mecca
for the outdoor enthusiast!
Our airport is the third largest in Ontario and served by
both West Jet and Air Canada. Many of us have families in
other parts of Canada, so we fly frequently and find it very
affordable.
