Nuclear Stress Test

  • For a Nuclear Stress Test an intravenous will be started on you and you will be injected with a dye.

  • You will wait 60 minutes and then have pictures of your heart which will take about 15 minutes.

  • Staff will then direct you back to the Stress Test Lab where an exercise test will be conducted.

  • The exercise test consists of walking on a moving treadmill (rather like walking uphill). You will be connected to a machine that will monitor your heart’s response to exercise. Your blood pressure, heart rate, and electrocardiogram will be followed closely throughout the test by the Respiratory Therapist and Physician.

  • At three minute intervals, the treadmill’s speed and slope will be increased. These increases continue until you reach the anticipated heart rate for your age. An injection of Cardiolite through the intravenous line will be given to you at this time.

  • If you experience chest pain, breathlessness, weakness, fatigue or dizziness, you must notify the staff present and the test will be terminated. A Respiratory Therapist and a Physician will be in attendance during this test.

  • Further pictures are taken 30 minutes after the treadmill tests.
