 The
Cardiac Rehab program provides discharge classes for inpatients
with a cardiac diagnosis. The classes are designed to provide
the patient and family with “survival skills”
upon discharge from hospital.
As an essential component in the care and recovery of the
cardiac patient The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
offers a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program that
is free of charge for those with heart disease and their loved
ones. Education sessions assist the client in obtaining knowledge
and information on the lifestyle modifications necessary to
live full and active lives. Individual stress counseling,
nutrition counseling and smoking cessation counseling is available.
Exercise classes are provided to those clients who are referred
by their physician. Based upon guidelines from the Canadian
Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation and the American College
of Sports Medicine, an individualized exercise prescription
is developed for each client particular to their condition
and needs. The client exercises with us for one hour and 15
minutes twice weekly for up to 6 months. Upon discharge from
the program the client has the option of joining the Maintenance
program at the Canada Games Complex (membership fee required),
exercising on their own or joining another community facility.
The program is staffed with a multidisciplinary team consisting of Physicians,
Registered Nurses, Kinesiologists, Dietitians, and Social
Workers. This professional team provides counseling, support
and education that will enhance the client’s program.
