Unit 1A is a dedicated oncology in-patient unit for oncology
patients and patients with oncology related concerns. It is
a 45 bed unit with nurses specially trained in all areas of
patient care, concentrating on the needs of oncology patients.
We offer team-focused care for all of our in-patients. Members
of our team include nurses, oncologists, social workers and
supportive care counselors, physiotherapists, occupational
therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, Community Care Access
Centre team members, discharge planners, radiation therapists,
diagnostic imaging staff, housekeeping staff, volunteers and
porters.
You will be assigned a primary nurse dedicated to your ongoing
assessment and care, and will receive excellent care 24 hours
a day.

Make Yourself Comfortable
For your convenience, there is a patient kitchen on 1A with
a toaster, microwave, fridge and kettle. You are welcome to
store your food here, but please make sure it is clearly marked.
You can get a patient label at the nursing station.
You can visit our family visiting room, located behind the
nursing station. It has a TV, couches and reading material
as well as a great view.
Visiting Hours
TBRHSC’s visiting hours are from 11:00 a.m. until 8:30
p.m.
Sometimes the nature of a patient’s illness may require
visits outside of regular visiting hours, and we will make
every effort to accommodate your needs. Please speak with
your primary nurse to discuss any request you may have. Please
note that your requests cannot interfere with your care and/or
the care and comfort of other patients.
Flower and Fruit Basket Restrictions
 |
Many
oncology patients have specific needs directly related to
their low immune systems. Because of this, flowers, plants
and fruit baskets are not allowed on Unit 1A. We appreciate
your cooperation.
You are welcome to receive any artificial or silk flower
arrangements to brighten your stay. |
Food Service
Meals are ordered for you based on the diet prescribed by
your doctor. If you have any special dietary needs and/or
the meals are not meeting your needs, please let your primary
nurse know.
We have a dietitian who is able to talk to you about your
meals and nutrition during your stay. If you would like to
talk to a dietitian, please let your primary nurse know. You
are welcome to bring in food from home, however we ask that
you check with your primary nurse to discuss nutritional needs
and suitable foods before you do this.
Other Helpful Information
Any electrical and/or battery operated equipment
you might want to bring to your hospital room must first be
checked to ensure it will not interfere with any diagnostic
equipment.
We have televisions and phones available to you in
your room. You can make arrangements to activate this equipment.
We have a great selection of patient information
about your patient journey. Please ask your primary care nurse
for any information you would like to see.
In our responsibility to protect patients and the
public, we may have to post ‘Special Precaution’
signs outside patient rooms. If you are entering a room with
one of these signs, we must ask for your complete cooperation
with our rules for these special circumstances. If you have
any questions, please check first with a nurse.
There is a manager available on the day shift from
Monday to Friday, and an assigned Charge Nurse on all other
shifts.
