Of
great importance to the Oncology Inpatient Program is our
specially trained oncology nursing staff. Patients with cancer
present with a varied list of complex needs that require the
Oncology Nurses to have specialized training, knowledge and
skills. Oncology prepared nurses are trained to care for patients
as they present with any oncology conditions that warrant
an inpatient stay.
Oncology patient care, from diagnosis through to palliation
or survivorship, requires excellence in the practice of oncology
nursing, in order to ensure that the provided care is safe,
consistent, respectful, ethical and in accordance with standards
of practice. The Oncology Nurse evaluates the care delivered
and is responsible and accountable for professional practice.

The Oncology Nurses at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre are an integral part of the interdisciplinary oncology
patient care team. Their oncology nursing interventions include,
but are not limited to:
- Administration, safe handling and disposal of chemotherapy medications.
- Central Line management.
- Psychosocial support through therapeutic communication and intervention.
- Management of immunocompromised patients.
- Management of oncology emergency situations.
- Pain Assessment and Symptom Management.
- Patient and family education.
- Knowledge of radiation therapy and its side effects.
- Adverse effects of antineoplastic drugs
- Knowledge of skin and wound care.
- Assessment of nutritional status, elimination patterns, nausea and vomiting.
