Nuclear Medicine Preparation

You are to follow the indicated instructions to prepare for your test:

  • No caffeine (coffee, tea, decaffeinated coffee, chocolate, soft drinks, some pain killers (i.e. Tylenol 3, Excedrin) for 24 hours prior to exam.
  • No anti-depressants, sedatives or mind-altering drugs for 48 hours prior to exam.

 

Gastrointestinal System – HIDA Scan (Gallbladder Scan) (1½ hour duration)

  • Do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.
  • No morphine or morphine derivatives at least 4 hours prior to exam.

 

Gastric Emptying (2½ hours duration)

  • Do not eat or drink 8 hours prior to exam.
  • Please notify department by calling 807-684-6322 if you have an allergy to eggs.

 

Meckel’s Study (1 hour duration)

  • Do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.

 

Thyroid Uptake (15 minutes – 1 hour duration)

  • No thyroid medication for 1 day to 6 months prior to exam (obtain this order from your physician).
  • No injection of iodine-based contrast media prior to exam.

 

Diuretic Renograms (1 hour duration)

  • No diuretics for 24 hours (obtain this order from your physician).
  • Please notify department by calling 807-684-6322 if you have an allergy to Sulpha drugs or Lasix.

 

Captopril Renal Scan (2½ hours duration)

  • Please consult with your physician for specific medication restrictions.
