It
is possible for most cardiac patients to return to full sexual activity after
a heart attack. Often there is some fear on the part of both partners of provoking
another heart attack which may interfere with fulfilling sexual activity, but
this will usually pass with time and experience. Other factors which may interfere
with resuming full sexual activity are: depression following your heart attack,
the effects of some drugs on sexual activity, and the concept that sexual activity
means intercourse, rather than pleasurable sensuousness.
One should avoid sexual activity after heavy meals and alcohol.
If pain, palpitations or shortness of breath should develop during or shortly
after sexual activity, consult with your doctor. Medication may frequently help.
Be aware that some drugs decrease your desire for sex, while others may interfere
with sexual response.
DO NOT STOP MEDICATIONS. IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS THAT YOU FEEL ARE
RELATED TO YOUR MEDICATIONS CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR.
Your drug dosage may be decreased or your medications may be changed. Be sure
to make your doctor aware of any problems or side-effects.
