April 24, 2009 Northwestern Ontario once again celebrated excellence in patient care as two care providers from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) were honoured with Human Touch Awards at Cancer Care Ontario 's annual general meeting in Toronto .
The Human Touch Awards honour front-line cancer care professionals from across the province who provide exceptional and compassionate care to cancer patients.
“Congratulations to Dr. Nicole Laferriere and Sue Bailey on receiving this prestigious provincial award. The outstanding care and compassion they provide their patients is truly inspiring. We are fortunate to have such world-class cancer care professionals in Northwestern Ontario ,” said Michael Power, VP Regional Cancer and Diagnostic Services, TBRHSC.
Ms. Bailey and Dr. Laferriere were two of only five award recipients in Ontario . All part-time or full-time health care professionals and providers who provide direct patient care at either a regional cancer centre or as part of the Regional Cancer Program including home care, palliative care, public health, community hospitals and primary care are eligible for the award.

Dr. Nicole Laferriere,
Hematologist, Regional Cancer Care
Dr. Nicole Laferriere was nominated by a cancer patient's mother for providing her 19-year-old son with exceptional care, and for providing their family with hope and support throughout his cancer journey. The extra time and care Dr. Laferriere took with the family helped them navigate the cancer system and her support kept them going through a difficult time.
“Dr. Laferriere is truly an exceptional person. She gave us hope. She kept us strong. And she is a reflection of this cancer centre. We are very fortunate in Thunder Bay to have this great facility – it is the best,” said Lina Vita, nominator and mother of Michael, who has Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
“I have been lucky to receive clinical awards in the past, but this award is honestly of the greatest satisfaction for me, because it's about the patients,” Dr. Laferriere said. “Michael's (cancer) journey is truly remarkable – they are a remarkable family.” |

Sue Bailey, RN,
Palliative Care Nurse,
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
Sue Bailey is known throughout Regional Cancer Care – Northwest as a truly outstanding palliative care nurse, providing care and compassion to patients and families coping with pain management and end-of-life care. She is the sole palliative care nurse for the entire Health Sciences Centre, spending the majority of her time on the Oncology Inpatient Unit. Here, she has inspired the nursing staff with her passion for her work and seemingly endless energy.
“Sue comes through for both patients and care providers, and brings a lot of clarity to difficult situations. She is invaluable as a team member, a wonderful resource, and just an incredible person. I often find her still on the floor well after her shift, having to make ‘just one more visit' to a patient. She has ignited a passion for palliative care for many nursing staff and is an exceptional role model,” said Bev Gellert, Manager for the Oncology Inpatient Unit at TBRHSC and Bailey's nominator.
Ms. Bailey is also a strong advocate for patients to return to long term care for palliation instead of remaining in acute care beds. She successfully collaborates, plans and organizes care to ensure that these transitions occur seamlessly without additional stress and worry to patients and families.
“I'm overwhelmed,” Ms. Bailey said of her award. “I feel that palliative care is a team effort, and I'm fortunate to work with so many great people. It is a privilege for me to be invited into people's lives when they are struggling with difficult decisions, and to help them in any way I can.” |
