Today Andrée Robichaud, the new President and CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, is having her first breast screening mammogram at the Linda Buchan Centre as a new client of the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).

The “Breast Screening Challenge” kicks off today as part of its 20th Anniversary celebration. The goal is to provide high-quality breast screening mammograms to 160 new clients in Northwestern Ontario in ONE day. The Challenge is happening all day (October 18th) from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances and Kenora.

“A breast screening mammogram could save the life of your mother, daughter, sister or wife. I just celebrated my 50th birthday and have taken advantage of the self-referral option to OBSP and will have my mammogram as part of the Breast Screening Challenge today. I encourage all women age 50 and over to take responsibility for your health, encourage someone you care about to join this program today,” says Robichaud.

In Northwestern Ontario, 598 patients have been diagnosed with cancers detected by OBSP. The program has provided high-quality mammograms to over 32,000 women in the Northwest since its launch in April 1992.

“We are making a difference here by detecting breast cancer in the earliest stages. It is your best defense, and women who participate in the OBSP return to the program regularly,” says Lori Della Vedova, Manager, Screening Programs, Regional Cancer Care Northwest.

Cancer Care Ontario recommends that every woman aged 50-69 have a breast screening mammogram once every two years.
