TBRRI and Lakehead University hold 1st International Workshop

It’s another first for Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) and Lakehead University. Today marks the joint launch of the “Lake Superior Imaging Consortium: 1st International Workshop on Advanced Technologies for Radiation Medical Imaging”. Participants, including international scientists and speakers from Lithuania, Germany, Japan, and the United States, are attending the three-day workshop supported by the following principal sponsors: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Province of Ontario (Ontario Research Fund).

“This workshop is another example of the strength of our partnerships and the potential we have to accomplish leading-edge research when we gather the best regional, national and international scientific minds into the same room,” says Michael Power, CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. “Certainly, expect to hear more about new innovations in technology, new clinical trials in translational research, and the work of our leading scientists at both TBRRI and Lakehead University.”

Providing an opportunity for collaboration among leading international and Canadian medical imaging researchers and industrial partners is key.

“Intensive efforts for knowledge creation and knowledge transformation nowadays ask for extensive transdisciplinary approaches and collaborations. Lakehead is excited and proud to be a partner of TBRRI in our common goal to make Thunder Bay a centre of biomedical imaging research and innovation,” says Dr. Rui Wang, Vice President Research, Lakehead University.

This workshop aims to encourage partnerships with the goal to design, develop, and commercialize the next generation of medical technologies and imaging detectors. Improved advanced detection devices have the potential to become more effective for a variety of medical imaging applications, for example x-ray and Positron Emission Mammography, diagnostic cardiac imaging, minimally invasive cardiac intervention (an alternative to surgery), living cell imaging and t tissue biopsy.

It is a full agenda with over 24 science sessions taking place over the course of three days, as well as built-in afternoon session for academics, hands-on science demonstrations, poster presentations and social networking. Delegates from Lakehead University, TBRRI, University of Saskachewan, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario, and McMaster University are participating in the workshop.

Participants will also have the unique opportunity to experience both the old and the new aspects of Thunder Bay. A tour and dinner are planned at Fort William Historical Park. They will also capture a glimpse of the future of our community with a tour of the ICR Discoveries building housing the new TBRRI facility on Munro Street.
