The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), reporting
on the Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR), has named
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) as Canada’s
top performing hospital during 2008.
The HSMR is the ratio of the number of deaths observed in
a hospital relative to what would be expected, based on the
average Canadian experience.
Ron Saddington is the TBRHSC President and CEO. Praising
the physicians, staff and volunteers, he said, “We have
provided exceptional care to achieve this rating. I believe
this designation endorses our feeling that we have the ability
to lead nationally in the provision of acute care. In fact,
this news confirms that we are achieving our Strategic Plan”.
Acknowledging that these are difficult times for everyone
delivering care, Mr. Saddington also noted that, “We
know that our healthcare challenges are formidable. Since
mortality factors can be specific to each hospital, even though
we are a leader, we will utilize this data because reducing
mortality continues to be an important goal for us, as it
is for every hospital. However, I want to commend our healthcare
teams for their achievement. The TBRHSC staff is innovative,
compassionate and caring, so providing “world-class”
patient care is not an overstatement. It is our reality, and
we are being recognized for it”.
