Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is celebrating
its third birthday. Three years ago a significant healthcare
milestone was achieved as the two sites of Thunder Bay Regional
Hospital - Port Arthur and McKellar - were emptied and moved
to one new state-of-the-art site. The achievement signaled
to the city and region that the clinical pathway to acute
care was finally consolidated after years of challenges as
a result of healthcare restructuring.
In a bold decision based on a plebiscite, the citizens of
Thunder Bay voted to develop a new facility rather than refurbish
an existing older hospital. They also gave generously beyond
their tax commitment as the TBRHS Foundation raised more than
15 million dollars toward the project. Property was purchased
from Lakehead University bordering on Oliver Road and Golf
Links Road.
Much of the construction work was performed by the local
labour force as skilled trades people ensured successful completion.
A unique design for the building and site has enabled TBRHSC
to win national and international architectural awards.
TBRHSC is now regarded among the leaders in acute care. With
leading-edge technology and highly skilled physicians and
staff, the focus on great patient care has never been clearer.
It is gratifying to know that our key partnerships with Lakehead
University, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Philips
Corporation, University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Sunnybrook
Health Sciences Centre, among others, are enabling our vision
of world-class patient care, teaching and research to move
ahead quickly.
The history of healthcare in the Lakehead is a story about
people who care about each other. Legacies tell about extraordinary
achievement. Much has been accomplished by those who have
seen a need for change and challenged people around them to
serve others with a greater need.
As we celebrate the third anniversary of moving into our new
site, we are grateful for the contribution of everyone who
has enabled us to reach this milestone. The images below are
just a small representation of the development and growth
TBRHSC has experienced over the past three years. We should
be deeply gratified by what has been accomplished.
