TBRHSC welcomes Dr. Mark Henderson
Director of the Interventional Cardiology (Angioplasty) Program

Click to listen to this page using ReadPlease Dr. Mark Henderson has joined the Medical Staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

 

As a leading Interventional Cardiologist with more than 20 years experience performing Coronary Angioplasty, Dr. Henderson, formerly from British Columbia, will lead Internal Medicine’s Cardiology group through expansionary phases of Catheter and Angioplasty patient care at TBRHSC.

 

Dr. Henderson is a highly respected practitioner, mentor, and educator and is expected to make a significant impact on the students and graduate students of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Dr. Gord Porter, Chief of Staff and V.P. Medical and Academic Affairs says that: “Dr. Henderson’s clinical cardiology leadership and experience will help bring cardiology care to a new level for all patients in Northwestern Ontario. We are excited to have such a qualified physician lead this transition in Thunder Bay”.

Lori Marshall is the Vice President, Medicine, Cardiology, Mental Health and Maternal Child Services. She states, “With the arrival of Dr. Henderson, our activity level has ‘skyrocketed’. The percentage of Angioplasty cases done in the Thunder Bay Program has increased from 40% - 95%”.

Dr. Ali Mirza recently received interventional care from Dr. Henderson. He says, “One of my arteries was 100% blocked and the fact that Dr. Henderson was able to open it up speaks volumes for his knowledge and expertise. We are very pleased and happy to have him in Thunder Bay.”

 

Since completing his fellowship at Toronto General Hospital, Dr. Henderson has held leadership roles in Cardiac Services at various hospitals in Canada including Toronto, Halifax and Vancouver.

 

Dr. Henderson has also worked as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Dalhousie Medical Schools. His portfolio includes extensive Cardiac Research and he has successfully published his findings in leading national and international medical journals.

 

The Angioplasty Program will continue to expand and grow under Dr. Henderson’s leadership. The TBRHSC remains committed to realizing the full potential of the Program with the addition of a second Cardiac Catheterization Lab, which will enable service to over 500 patients each year and 24-hour access to emergency treatment.

 

The Northern Cardiac Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation will provide funds to support the expansion.

Glenn Craig, President and CEO Health Sciences Foundation announced today that over $1 million has been raised to date. “The people of our community clearly understand the value of world-class cardiac services close to home,” he says. “Already their investments in Angioplasty are realizing great returns. With this level of donor support and a distinguished professional like Dr. Henderson leading the Angioplasty Program, we are well on our way to offering Northwestern Ontario the Gold Standard of Cardiac Care.”
