Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseIn 2006-2007, the Northern Cancer Research Foundation (NCRF) will disburse $1,339,230.00 in grant funding to improve cancer care in Northwestern Ontario. This grant funding will support the many research activities at the regional cancer centre; improve cancer patient care in Northwestern Ontario and further educational and awareness efforts across the entire region.

To date, the NCRF has granted over $9.1 million to improve cancer care in Northwestern Ontario. Recent grants include significant financial support for The Linda Buchan Centre for Breast Screening and Assessment, and research into molecules in cervical cells and their progression from normal cell behaviour to malignancy as a result of inflammation with the intent of inhibiting these molecules and stopping the development of cervical cancer for some patients. The NCRF, in partnership with the regional cancer centre, promoted The Bottom Line annual campaign to raise awareness of colorectal cancer to promote screening and encourage the discussion of early warning signs with a physician. As well, the NCRF granted significant funds to support numerous multi-disciplinary research projects including medical physics and inpatient smoking cessation research. Many of the research projects are collaborative with Lakehead University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine researchers.

In 1994, a volunteer group of Thunder Bay residents came together to form the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. Their goal was to keep 100% of all gifts in the region to benefit the people of Northwestern Ontario. The NCRF is the sole agency dedicated to raising funds to support cancer research, patient care and education and awareness in Northwestern Ontario. The NCRF continues to use its grant approval system to ensure funds donated by the community will improve cancer care for the benefit of the people of Northwestern Ontario.

The Northern Cancer Research Foundation is not affiliated with any other provincial or national cancer charity. A board of local community volunteers, led by Chair Brian McKinnon, governs the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.
