Fort William Rotary exceeds $1 million Commitment
With the presentation of a cheque earlier this week, the Fort
William Rotary Club met and exceeded its commitment to provide
an astounding $1 million to the Care Beyond Compare campaign
in support of the building and equipping of the Thunder Bay
Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). The final instalment
brings the total to over $1,023,000.00 and marks the club’s
largest contribution to a single project. Rotarians raised
the funds through the Rotary House Draw Lottery, which will
continue to support TBRHSC and other worthwhile charities.
In recognition of this outstanding achievement by Rotary
volunteers, the TBRHSC Ambulatory Care Centre is named in
honour of the Fort William Rotary Club.
Thank you Fort William Rotarians, your leadership and commitment
has greatly helped many patients at the Health Sciences Centre.
Architects build on Campaign
Thunder Bay Architecture and Engineering company Kuch Stephenson
Gibson Malo is truly helping to build a better community.
Their generous $25,000 contribution to the ‘Save a Heart’
campaign helps fight cardiac disease in Northwestern Ontario
because it supports the purchase life-saving cardiac equipment
at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Credit Unions Care
It all adds up to a healthier Northwestern Ontario! Regional
Credit Unions are participating in the MasterCard iCare program,
donating $1.00 for every $1,000 of member spending. The program
has raised $25,000 to help the Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Foundation purchase medical equipment vital to patient
care services at our Health Sciences Centre.
Patients benefit each and every day from the generosity of
donors. Thanks to the Credit Union Managers Association for
supporting exceptional care for all patients.
Ophthalmology Endowment initiated;
donors urge others to grow fund.
When Verna Gilbart began to lose her eyesight due to Age-Related
Macular Degeneration, she and her husband Lloyd were determined
to find the best care possible.
“We would have gone to Singapore if we had to,”
says Lloyd Gilbart. “But we found the best care right
here!”
The Gilbarts’ gratitude for the exceptional care that
led to Verna’s improved eyesight prompted them to establish
an Ophthalmology Endowment Fund so that the best equipment
is always available to treat patients at the Lions Vision
Care Centre at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
On behalf of those whose vision will be improved or saved
due to equipment purchased through this endowment, the Health
Sciences Foundation extends it appreciation to Lloyd and Verna
Gilbart. To contribute to the fund, please contact the Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation at 807-684-7107.
Ladies Venet Society
The Ladies Venet Society is making great efforts to battle
heart disease in our community. Their support is helping thousands
of cardiac patients at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre combat cardiac disease with new and advanced technology
and equipment.
Earlier this year, the Ladies Venet Society hosted their 35th
annual Carnavale Venet Tea and raised $6,000 for the Health
Sciences Foundation. To date, they have donated $20,539.67
in support of the Foundation’s “Save a Heart”
campaign for cardiac equipment at our Health Sciences Centre.
The Health Sciences Foundation appreciates all members of
the Ladies Venet Society for their outstanding efforts. Together,
we make a healthier Northwestern Ontario.
Legion Members Saving Hearts
Cardiac patients at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre (TBRHSC) will benefit from a generous donation of $5,000
in support of cardiac equipment. Royal Canadian Legion (Port
Arthur) Branch #5 members recently contributed to the “Save
a Heart” campaign of the Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Foundation. To date, the Branch #5 members have contributed
a total of $19,000 to this important campaign. Thanks to caring
donors like these, early treatment and recovery is available
to cardiac patients in Northwestern Ontario.
Generating Results
A patient’s road to recovery begins with a diagnosis.
Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin sooner, which is
especially critical for cardiac patients.
Through a generous contribution of $50,000, Ontario Power
Generation has put diagnosis tools at the fingertips of cardiologists
at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). The
funding purchased two Physician Access Stations, which allow
cardiologists to review patient history and cardiac stress
test results faster than before, and at more locations throughout
the Health Sciences Centre. The Centre is a designated health
services facility for Ontario Power Generation’s operations
in the Northwest.
Thanks to Ontario Power Generation, each and every patient
visiting the Ontario Power Generation Nuclear Medicine Centre
receives early diagnosis and treatment that is so crucial
to saving lives.
Soroptimists Lend a Helping Hand
Victims of sexual assault and domestic violence are able
to turn to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
for emergency treatment as well as follow-up care. The Sexual
Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre provides 24-hour
service by specially trained nurses.
Thanks to the generosity of Soroptimists International of
Thunder Bay, patients of the Treatment Centre are well supported.
Through fundraising events such as their annual Garden Seminars,
the Soroptimists have donated over $25,000 to the Health Sciences
Foundation. The funds help purchase specialized equipment
for treatment and items to assist patients once they leave
the facility, such as clothing and transportation support.
The Health Sciences Foundation is grateful to the Soroptimists
International of Thunder Bay for their continued efforts to
advance patient care for everyone in Northwestern Ontario.
Volunteer Association Contributes
$100,000
The members of the Volunteer Association to the Thunder Bay
Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) truly make a difference
in the lives of others. In addition to dedicating time and
skills to advance patient care in Northwestern Ontario, the
group has donated well over $1 million to the Health Sciences
Foundation in support of patient care delivery.
Most recently, the Volunteer Association committed $100,000
towards the purchase of Holter Monitors for cardiac patients.
Holter Monitors are fundamental in the diagnosis of cardiac
conditions in patients. The monitors, worn by the patient,
take a continuous tape recording of a patient’s EKG
for 24 hours.
The outstanding dedication to healthcare demonstrated by
the members of the Volunteer Association helps save lives
in our community. The Foundation is grateful to these individuals
for their continuous efforts as volunteers and donors.
Following a moving presentation by Ms. Leonzio on the benefits
of Holter Monitors in identifying cardiac problems, the Volunteer
Association presented a donation to the Foundation at its
Annual Meeting held in May, 2007. The $100,000 contribution
will purchase a complete Holter Monitor system, including
12 mobile monitors.
