Click to listen to this page using ReadPlease With the presentation of a cheque earlier this week, the Fort William Rotary Club met and exceeded its commitment to provide an astounding $1 million to the Care Beyond Compare campaign in support of the building and equipping of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). The final instalment brings the total to over $1,023,000.00 and marks the club’s largest contribution to a single project. Rotarians raised the funds through the Rotary House Draw Lottery, which will continue to support TBRHSC and other worthwhile charities.

In recognition of this outstanding achievement by Rotary volunteers, the TBRHSC Ambulatory Care Centre is named in honour of the Fort William Rotary Club.

Thank you Fort William Rotarians, your leadership and commitment has greatly helped many patients at the Health Sciences Centre.

Ophthalmology Endowment initiated; donors urge others to grow fund.

Endowment

Ophthalmologists Dr. Dhurjon and Dr. Francis accept a $25,000 contribution from Lloyd and Verna Gilbart.

When Verna Gilbart began to lose her eyesight due to Age-Related Macular Degeneration, she and her husband Lloyd were determined to find the best care possible.

“We would have gone to Singapore if we had to,” says Lloyd Gilbart. “But we found the best care right here!”

The Gilbarts’ gratitude for the exceptional care that led to Verna’s improved eyesight prompted them to establish an Ophthalmology Endowment Fund so that the best equipment is always available to treat patients at the Lions Vision Care Centre at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

On behalf of those whose vision will be improved or saved due to equipment purchased through this endowment, the Health Sciences Foundation extends it appreciation to Lloyd and Verna Gilbart. To contribute to the fund, please contact the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation at 807-684-7107.

Generating Results

OPG

Ontario Power Generation’s Derrick Brooks, Manager – NW Fossil (Atikokan & Thunder Bay Generating Stations) and Gary Whitney, Manager Northwest Plant Group, receive a demonstration of the extensive capabilities of a Physician Access Station by TBRHSC’s Dr. K.M. Masood.

A patient’s road to recovery begins with a diagnosis. Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin sooner, which is especially critical for cardiac patients.

Through a generous contribution of $50,000, Ontario Power Generation has put diagnosis tools at the fingertips of cardiologists at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). The funding purchased two Physician Access Stations, which allow cardiologists to review patient history and cardiac stress test results faster than before, and at more locations throughout the Health Sciences Centre. The Centre is a designated health services facility for Ontario Power Generation’s operations in the Northwest.

Thanks to Ontario Power Generation, each and every patient visiting the Ontario Power Generation Nuclear Medicine Centre receives early diagnosis and treatment that is so crucial to saving lives.

Volunteer Association

The members of the Volunteer Association to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) truly make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to dedicating time and skills to advance patient care in Northwestern Ontario, the group has donated well over $1 million to the Health Sciences Foundation in support of patient care delivery.

Most recently, the Volunteer Association committed $100,000 towards the purchase of Holter Monitors for cardiac patients. Holter Monitors are fundamental in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions in patients. The monitors, worn by the patient, take a continuous tape recording of a patient’s EKG for 24 hours.

The outstanding dedication to healthcare demonstrated by the members of the Volunteer Association helps save lives in our community. The Foundation is grateful to these individuals for their continuous efforts as volunteers and donors.

Following a moving presentation by Ms. Leonzio on the benefits of Holter Monitors in identifying cardiac problems, the Volunteer Association presented a donation to the Foundation at its Annual Meeting held in May, 2007. The $100,000 contribution will purchase a complete Holter Monitor system, including 12 mobile monitors.
