MANITOBA INQUEST REPORT PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGERY

Over the past several weeks all Care and System Teams have been reviewing the Manitoba Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inquest. This report provides insight into the several pediatric deaths that occurred during or shortly after cardiac surgery.

Some of the issues that are discussed in the report include:

  • Recruitment, selection and retention of medical staff
  • Structure, leadership, culture and communication
  • Informed consent
  • Duty of loyalty versus the duty to inform

The report provides excellent background material for an ethical discussion related to issues in today's health care.

The inquest report can be accessed at www.pediatriccardiacinquest.mb.ca
